Why do I need anaesthesia at the dental surgery?

In order for your dental visit to be as comfortable and stress-free as possible, your dentist may suggest anaesthesia to eradicate any pain or anxiety that may be related to your dental treatment. The type of anaesthesia administered will vary depending on the procedure and your needs and preferences. You and your dentist will select the appropriate level of anaesthesia, which is right for you.

What are the levels of dental anaesthesia?

Local anaesthesia is the most common form of anaesthesia, and eliminates pain in a specific area of the mouth. Your dentist may use a topical anaesthetic such as a cream to numb an area, before injection of a local anaesthetic. Injectable anaesthetics numb a specific area of the mouth tissue for a short amount of time, and are commonly used before filling cavities, extractions, preparation for crowns and other surgical procedures.

Conscious sedation is an option used to help you relax during a dental procedure, and can be administered through the mouth, inhalation or injection. It can be combined with a local anaesthetic to help alleviate pain during the procedure, and can also help to reduce anxiety. You will still remain calm and responsive under conscious sedation, however the effects of stress and anxiety will be decreased.

General anaesthesia is used for more complex surgical procedures and is administered by either gas or injection. You will be unconscious during general anaesthesia, and will need more time to properly wake up.

What should I tell my dentist before receiving anaesthesia?

Good communication is the best way to ensure a safe, problem-free treatment, so it’s important to answer all your dentist’s questions as fully as you can, and to make sure that you voice your concerns. Your dentist will need to be aware of the medications you are currently taking, any allergic reactions that you have experienced to medications in the past, and your current state of health. With this information, your dentist will be able to advise you on everything you need to know before receiving treatment.

Your comfort and peace of mind is of the utmost importance to us, and we will strive to make your treatment as safe and comfortable as possible.
